Kayarohaneswarar Temple at Nagappattinam

Deities: Kayarohaneswarar, Tyagarajar (Shiva)

Location: Nagappattinam in Tamilnadu near Tanjore

Significance:This is a well visited shrine dedicated to Shiva - Kayarohaneswarar and Shakti (Neelayadakshi). This is considered to be one of the 63 Shakti Peethams in India. It is also one of the Sapta Vidanga Stalams or one of the seven Vidanga Stalams housing Somaskandar (the other six being Tirunallar, Tiruvarur etc.)

Antiquity: This temple was built by King Salivahanan of the Chola dynasty. Its fame has been sung by the Saivite Saint poets of the last millennium. This temple has also been sung by Muthuswami Deekshitar and its mythology has been described in the book Kayarohana Puranam by Maha Vidwan Meenakshisundaram Pillai.
