Description:
This Shivastalam is a maadakkovil built by Ko Chenkkan Cholan, at an elevation in
this town which is also known as Shankharanyam. Aakkoor is considered to
be the 46th in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola kingdom
located south of the river Kaveri. This temple is also known as
Taantonrimaadam (that which appeared on a self made hill), and Tolkoyil. This town is
located on the railroad between Mayiladuturai and
Tarangambadi. Sambandar is believed to have visited here in the company of
Kungiliyakkalaya Nayanar. Legend has it that Shiva appeared in
the guise of the 1000th guest (Aayirattil Oruvar), in a feast offered by a devout Chola
monarch; an image of this manifestation, is seen in this temple.
The Temple: Natarajar's image here is of great beauty. Three worship
services are offered here each day. Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam and Navaratri are
celebrated here. |
